Greenwashing 101 — Recycled plastic bottle clothing is not sustainable.

I don't know where I first spotted it, but it seems like almost every brand is selling the same claim: Our recycled polyester saves bottles from landfills!” Sounds awesome, except for one thing, it doesn’t appear to be true.

It’s time to start
some uncomfortable
conversations.

If you are based in Europe, Nigeria, China, the entire Western half of the United States, or anywhere else experiencing extreme weather related to the climate crisis, you know full well things are not just going to be bad for the next generation, the crisis is beginning to unfold right now.

It’s time to talk about the elephant in the room: Can the fashion industry keep growing indefinitely?

09-05-2021

Do you want to give yourself a headache? Try reading a fashion company’s sustainability report and then read the exact same company’s investor report. The former presents images of pristine nature, solar panels on corporate headquarters and environmental targets that almost assuage my climate anxiety. But then the latter does away with much of that talk and emphasizes growth - store growth, sales growth - growth, growth, growth.

The ugly truths behind a beautiful industry

Climate Change

Over 8% of total global greenhouse gas emissions are produced by the apparel/footwear industry 1

The industry’s CO₂ emissions are projected to increase by more than 60% by 2030 2

If the industry continues on its current path, by 2050 it could use more than 26% of the total global carbon budget 3

Production, Consumption, Waste

The average consumer bought 60% more clothing in 2014 than in 2000, but kept each garment half as long 4

On average Americans are throwing away 81 lbs of textiles per person per year 5

Ocean Pollution

Plastic microfibers shed from synthetic clothing into the water account for 85% of the human-made material found along ocean shores, threatening marine wildlife and ending up in our food supply 6

Labor/Women

The apparel industry, made up largely of women, is intricately linked with both child and forced labor 7

The workers making our clothes receive only .5 - 4% of the final retail cost of a garment 8

How apparel is made.
What it’s made from.
Who’s making it.
What happens to it after.

Time to set a
New Standard.

NSI is here to:

Engage citizens with meaningful information to demand an industry that exists within planetary bounds, and allows the people working in the industry and its supply chain to thrive. Provide meaningful guidance to brands to live up to this New Standard.

3 Pillars

1

Research

See the forest through the greenwash.

Right the misinformation wrongs and identify the best practices.

Create the defecto data and innovation hub for the industry and its stakeholders.

2

Activate

Make buying better, more profitable.

Unite and embolden key influencers across the industry and make the demand, happen.

3

Accelerate

Utilize the research and data to help brands and manufacturers put the New Standard of ideas and innovations into practice.

The Information
Platform

NSI seeks to bring together existing sustainability efforts in the industry and ensure that strong science and data drives change in the sector. At the heart of this will be NSI’s Information Platform, a publicly available community tool for interested citizens, brands, media, and NGOs to ensure that information about the industry that is being spread comes from reliable sources.
